Color Capping Is the New Paint Trend That Takes Color Drenching to the Next Level
This 1920s Colonial Home was Stripped of All Its original Features – this designer brought it back to life with bold colors, clashing patterns, and funky furniture
“This was what the homeowners of this 1905 property were dealing with when they moved from the suburbs to South Orange's Academy Heights, New Jersey. But they wanted that character back. So they brought on designer Sarah Storms to transform the first floor of the house. Her task was to add character to the home, restore some of the historic roots, while also designing spaces that worked for a young family and modern life.”

a stately home from 1927 with lots of color and preserved stained glass windows and classic style
Interior designer Sarah Storms was in charge of bringing an old-fashioned early 20th-century house to life with contemporary touches, but without forgetting its glorious past.
A Colonial Update: Comfy, Colorful and Moody
“Creating a moody vibe was a balancing act. The clients wanted wallpaper and dark walls but didn’t want it to feel like a cave. Wrapping the walls in dark wallpaper was the boldest move in the space. Instead of painting the trim white, we selected a green from the paper. This allows for subtle contrast between the trim and the walls instead of a jarring contrast with the more typical white.”

a fresh take
“The owners of this century-old South Orange home wanted to redesign their living room, and their preferred aesthetic was more 2020s than Roaring ’20s. ‘They were looking for a fresh, new traditional vibe, something contemporary in nature,’ says Sarah Storms of Maplewood-based design firm Styled by Storms.”

“When Storms saw the house, she realized the dining room needed a makeover as well. “It was very much in the former owners’ style,” she says—beige and bland. The design she and the homeowners devised for both rooms, on the other hand, would reflect what Storms calls ‘a grand bohemian concept that’s comfortable and refined but also artistic—something moody, yet bright.’”
