Twists on the Classics - Kitchen Renovation
Location: South Orange, NJ

A gorgeous, 100+ year old house needed a kitchen renovation to honor the bones and history of the house, while keeping up with the busy homeowner’s lifestyle. Untouched since the 1980’s, the original kitchen was small—thus three rooms were combined to create a large, open working kitchen and laundry room.

Design features in the new kitchen included a nod to a “real chef’s” kitchen, including a black pegboard for hanging pans and utensils inspired by culinary legend Julia Child’s professional kitchen. The finish palette was thoughtfully curated to honor the home’s unique history and still match the project’s strong vision: subway tile in glossy black behind the chef’s stove, vertical board and batten walls and backsplash behind the cabinets, travertine floor tile, and highly functional quartzite countertops to keep up with the busy chef.

Billowy Roman shades in a gauzy gray with metallic threads woven throughout added softness to the more industrial-leaning finishes, while streamlined, contemporary lighting fixtures cast soft sparkles off the polished chrome cabinet hardware.
